SK+I News: SK+I is Winning!

It’s been an exciting past few months! Congratulations to Escher and Agora at The Collective for being 2020 NAIOP DC|MD Awards of Excellence winners for Best Multi-Family Project and Best Amenity Space. Maren won Delta Associates’ Best Washington/Baltimore Apartment Community and The Edison received the Jury of Citation in Residential Architecture by AIA Maryland for the Chapter Design Awards.

ESCHER WINS BEST MULTI-FAMILY PROJECT

Escher, located in Rockville’s Twinbrook neighborhood, received the NAIOP DC|MD Awards of Excellence for Best Multi-Family Project of Montgomery, Prince George’s and Frederick Counties. Designed to invite and entice, Escher transformed a vacant 5.29 acre parking lot with an abandoned 35,000 square foot retail store into an inviting community for 317 new apartment residences next to Twinbrook Metro Station. The makeover included a new “paseo” private drive created to form a signature public use space accessible to both residents and the public, producing a vista from Chapman Avenue and splitting the site into two parcels—2.88 acres for the Escher apartment building and 2.41 acres for a later second phase of 70 townhomes.

MAREN WINS BEST APARTMENT COMMUNITY

Maren wins Delta Associates’ Awards for Excellence for Best Washington/Baltimore Apartment Community! Sitting on the site of a former cement plant, Maren is the second phase of a six-acre, four-building Riverfront redevelopment project that takes full advantage of its location at the waterfront. The 13-story, 264-unit multifamily mixed-use tower is directly situated between Nationals Park to the north and the Anacostia River to the south. It is conveniently located within half a mile walking distance to the Navy Yard metro station, has several Capital Bike Share stations, and provides ample bike storage facilities for its residents.

AGORA WINS BEST AMENITY SPACE

Agora at The Collective, located in D.C.’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood won the NAIOP DC|MD Awards of Excellence for Best Amenity Space. Agora is one of three properties of The Collective development. Its “pourus” interior concept allows for a comfortable and connected urban flow to continue from the neighborhood experience to the lobby and common, shared environments, and ultimately, to the individual units. Amenities include cozy lounges, “Relax/Recharge” rooms offering massage beds, a demo kitchen, a golf simulator room, a rooftop with jaw-dropping views of the city, a dog park, and a game room.

THE EDISON RECEIVES JURY CITATION

Located in northeast Washington, D.C., The Edison is a truly unique addition to the multifamily buildings that have become so abundant in the Nation’s Capital. The Edison was the first new construction project in the Union Market area, which is seeing rapid development, and set the tone for the neighborhood. The Edison acts as a gateway to the Union Market area as it is one of the first buildings to be encountered by pedestrians, residents, and shoppers exiting from the NoMa-Galludet metro station. The building utilized innovative wood construction technology and design in order to allude to the industrial cast iron facades from the turn of the 20th century that can be found in urban, mixed-use warehouse districts such as in New York and Chicago.
