Located on the edge of vibrant U Street Historic District, 9th and W will complete the urban block behind the iconic 9:30 Club music venue with a 312-unit mixed-use, residential building. The building design responds to the diverse conditions of the lots and adjacent buildings surrounding the site. The design will relate to the different urban scales: the existing historic urban fabric, the new upcoming high-rise buildings, and the nearby residential townhouses.

The building is set back from the property line on V Street, to create a wider sidewalk to improve the streetscape experience. To activate the street, a row of apartments will have street access and new retail will be provided. The main building façade massing is an alternating pattern of projected two-story bay windows and colors. This pattern was inspired from the music venue sound waves and was interpreted as a scaled-up of the projection of bays of the nearby residential townhomes.

The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification and incorporates multiple energy efficient systems including extensive green roofing and planted areas to manage stormwater, provide increased insulation, and reduce heat island effect. Additionally, in an effort to reduce energy usage, efficient light fixtures and mechanical systems were selected and occupancy sensors will be installed.
