DOCK 79 AIA DC Tour 2017

Architecture Month is just around the corner and we’re on schedule for our AIA|DC tour of Dock 79! Register here: http://bit.ly/Dock79Tour

Dock 79 is situated on the Anacostia River and overlooks the ever-changing revitalized waterfront, the Nationals’ Stadium, and notable remnants of the neighborhood’s industrial past. This blending of past, present, and future inspired Dock 79’s design team to develop a building with two distinct languages. Facing the Esplanade, the south and courtyard facades achieve an open, playful feel through the extensive use of glass and shading devices, in addition large balconies will afford expansive views. In contrast, the facades facing the urban core are more structured and grounded. Masonry planes, fenestration with double story reading, metal accents and railing are all used to create a relation to adjacent The Yards and subtly recollect the industrial heritage of the area.

During this tour, participants will gain an understanding of the vision and determination required in the execution of a four-phase mixed-use master development in an area rich with urban revitalization projects. Attendees will tour the first residential building and learn how the developer’s vision of bringing density and a mix of uses to the under-utilized Anacostia Riverfront will be a catalyst in the transformation Washington’s waterfront. The tour will also explore how the design opens pedestrian access to the waterfront with retail and entertainment that embrace the river. In addition, tour participants will explore the construction and plan for the larger community evaluate the challenges and successes of a large-scale riverfront redevelopment.
